More students now start their college search with an AI assistant than with Google. AI answers name a handful of institutions, drawn from the institution's own pages, education portals, rankings, forums and news. To get recommended, an institution needs answer-first program pages, consistent facts everywhere students compare, third-party proof and a monthly check of what AI says about it. This guide shows how to run that check and fix what it finds.
What the data says
OHO surveyed 530 people in March 2026, including 327 prospective and current undergraduates aged 17 to 22. Among students actively researching college:
- 40% had used AI assistants for their college search, and 73% used chatbots routinely.
- 36% started their search with AI, compared with 32% who started with Google.
- 74% said AI helped them find schools they had not considered, and 50% said it helped them drop schools from their list.
- 65% rated AI information as accurate, up from 51% two years earlier.
- Nearly three in four had received answers about a college without visiting its website.
Read that last point twice. AI adds institutions to a shortlist and removes them, often before the student ever sees your site. The way to win is not to fight the shift but to make sure what AI says about you is complete, current and true. This is the work of generative engine optimization, applied to admissions.

The five questions students ask AI
Students do not type keywords into ChatGPT. They ask full questions, often with their own situation in them. Almost all of them fall into five types.
| Question type | Example prompt | What AI needs to answer it |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | "best colleges for data science in India under 10 lakh" | Clear subject coverage, fees, rankings, portal listings |
| Comparison | "IIM vs XLRI for an executive MBA" | Side-by-side facts: duration, fees, outcomes, eligibility |
| Fit | "is an online MBA good for someone with 8 years of experience" | Who the program is for, format, workload |
| Cost and return | "fees and placements for BBA at X" | Current fees, scholarships, verified outcomes with the year |
| Validation | "is X university legit", "X reviews" | Accreditation, rankings, reviews, forum and news mentions |
Parents ask the same way: "best CBSE school in Gurgaon with transport", "international schools in Bangalore with IB". For school chains, the validation questions (safety, results, teacher quality) matter most.
Where AI gets its answers about institutions
AI assistants build an answer from many sources at once. Your website is one of them, and often not the most trusted one.
Six sources AI assistants use to answer questions about an institution. 6 roles around “The AI answer”:
- Your website: program pages, fees, outcomes
- Education portals: Shiksha, Careers360, CollegeDunia
- Rankings: NIRF, QS and others
- Wikipedia and news
- Forums and video: Reddit, Quora, YouTube
- Reviews: Google and portal reviews
If those sources disagree, AI either picks one at random or leaves you out. The most common problems we find in audits are old fees on portals, a program name that differs between the site and the portal, and placement claims with no source anywhere.
How to audit what AI says about you
Run this once to get a baseline, then every month. It takes a day the first time and two hours after that.
- Write 25 prompts. Five of each question type above, for your three most important programs or grades. Use the students' words, not your brochure's.
- Run them in four places. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use a clean browser session and set the location to the city or country you recruit from.
- Record three things per answer. Were you named? Which institutions were named instead? Were the facts about you right?
- Score it. AI share of voice = prompts where you are named ÷ prompts run. Fact accuracy = facts AI got right ÷ facts it stated about you. Competitor share = prompts where a named competitor appears ÷ prompts run.
- Trace the sources. For every wrong fact, find where it came from: Perplexity and AI Overviews show their sources; for others, search the wrong fact in quotes.
- Prioritize. Fix wrong facts first (they cost you students now), then gaps where competitors are named and you are not.
A worked example: you run 25 prompts in four assistants, which is 100 answers. You are named in 18, so your AI share of voice is 18%. In those 18 answers AI stated 40 facts about you and got 31 right, so fact accuracy is 78%. Your main competitor is named in 52 answers, or 52%. That gap, not traffic, is the number to close.
Eight steps to get recommended
- Publish one fact sheet page. A page that states, in plain text, the facts students ask AI about: accreditation, rankings with year and body, programs, fees, intakes, campus locations, outcomes with year and source. Link it from the footer.
- Rebuild program pages answer-first. Open every program page with two or three sentences that answer who it is for, the format, duration, fees and next intake, then the details. These blocks are what AI lifts.
- Make facts match everywhere. Update portals, Wikipedia, rankings submissions and Google Business Profiles before each admission cycle, with the same program names, fees and dates as your site.
- Add schema. CollegeOrUniversity or School for the institution, Course for programs, FAQPage for admissions questions, Event for open days. Keep it in sync with the page.
- Let AI crawlers in. Check robots.txt and your firewall rules. Blocking GPTBot, Google-Extended or PerplexityBot keeps your pages out of the answers.
- Earn third-party proof. Rankings, news coverage, student stories on YouTube, and real answers from named staff on Reddit and Quora. AI trusts what others say about you more than what you say about yourself.
- Answer the comparison questions yourself. If students ask "X vs Y", publish an honest comparison guide on your site. Without one, AI builds the comparison from someone else's page.
- Track it monthly. Re-run the same 25 prompts every month, and report share of voice and fact accuracy next to organic traffic and inquiries.
What this means for schools and coaching institutes
Parents use AI the same way, and for local decisions AI leans heavily on Google Business Profiles and reviews. For a school chain or a coaching institute, the biggest AI wins usually come from three places: a complete Google Business Profile for every campus, a steady flow of answered reviews, and campus pages that state board, grades, fees range, transport and timings in plain text.
Checklist
A real example
For a leading business school, the goal was non-branded discovery: the searches and questions from people who did not yet know which business school they wanted. The school doubled its keywords in Google's top 3 and grew non-branded keywords 45%, which is the same visibility AI assistants draw on when they build a shortlist.
Common mistakes
- Treating AI as a fad. More students already start with AI than with Google.
- Checking once. AI answers change month to month. Track the same prompts on a schedule.
- Fixing only the website. If the portal says last year's fee, AI may repeat it.
- Blocking AI crawlers by default. Many institutions do it through a security setting without knowing.
- Unsourced claims. "Best placements in India" with no year or source is ignored, or worse, contradicted.

Questions people ask
Do students really use ChatGPT to choose a college?
Yes. In OHO's March 2026 survey, 40% of students actively researching college had used AI assistants for it, and more started their search with AI (36%) than with Google (32%).
How do I get my university recommended by ChatGPT?
Publish clear, answer-first facts on your own site, make them match on portals, rankings and Wikipedia, earn third-party proof, allow AI crawlers, and track a fixed set of prompts every month.
What is AI share of voice?
The share of tracked AI prompts in which your institution is named. Prompts where you are named divided by prompts tracked.
Why does AI show the wrong fees for my college?
Usually because an older figure is on a portal, a PDF or a news article. Find the source, correct it there, and state the current fee clearly on your own program page.
Does AI search matter for schools?
Yes. Parents ask AI for school suggestions, and the answers lean on Google Business Profiles, reviews and campus pages.
Is this different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. The same pages and facts serve both, but AI search adds the need for consistent facts across third-party sources and a different way to measure visibility.
