SEO earns your pages a ranked position in search results so people click. GEO (generative engine optimization) earns your brand a mention or citation inside answers written by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. They share the same foundations, crawlable pages, useful content and trusted signals, so the smart move is not GEO instead of SEO but one program that does both, measured by rankings, AI mentions and leads together.
GEO vs SEO at a glance
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows up | Search result pages, Google Maps | AI answers in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, AI Overviews, AI Mode |
| The result you want | A high position and a click | Your brand named or cited in the answer |
| The unit of targeting | A keyword | A full question, often with context |
| How many winners | Ten results per page, plus ads and Maps | Often three to five brands per answer |
| Main signals | Relevance, links, technical health, experience | The same, plus clear answers, entity clarity, citations and mentions across the web |
| How you measure it | Rankings, impressions, clicks, conversions | Mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, AI referral traffic, conversions |
| Speed of change | Rankings move over weeks | Answers can change between runs, so trends matter more than single checks |
Where GEO and SEO overlap
Most of the work is shared. AI assistants and AI search features draw heavily on pages that search engines already find, index and trust. A site that is slow, blocked or thin will struggle in both. The shared foundations are:
- Technical access: pages that load fast, render without heavy JavaScript and are open to crawlers.
- Helpful, specific content: pages that answer the question fully, with examples and data.
- Authority: links and mentions from credible sites in your field.
- Structure: clear headings, lists, tables and structured data.
If you are already doing SEO well, you have a head start on GEO.
GEO vs SEO: two overlapping circles, with most of the work shared. Overlapping sets: SEO, GEO.
SEO only:
- rankings
- clicks
- Maps pack
- keyword targeting
Shared:
- crawlable pages
- helpful content
- authority
- structure and schema
GEO only:
- AI crawler access
- answer-first writing
- entity consistency
- mentions across the web
- AI share of voice
What GEO adds
GEO asks a different question: when an AI writes an answer about your category, does it know who you are, trust you, and choose to name you? That adds five pieces of work.
- AI crawler access. Check robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others. Many sites block them by accident, which means those assistants cannot read or cite your pages.
- Answer-first writing. Put a direct, quotable answer near the top of every important page. AI systems lift short, self-contained statements more easily than long introductions.
- Entity clarity. Use Organization, Service, Product and FAQ schema, and keep your name, description, locations and services identical on your site, LinkedIn, directories and review platforms, so AI has one consistent picture of your business.
- Citation-worthy evidence. Research on generative engine optimization from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute and IIT Delhi (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved a source's visibility in generative answers by up to about 40%. Specific numbers, named sources and real examples help.
- Mentions beyond your site. AI assistants weigh what others say about you: industry media, partner pages, comparison sites, reviews and, where you qualify, Wikipedia or Wikidata.
How to do both: a 90-day plan
- Weeks 1 to 2: audit access. Check indexing in Search Console, page speed, JavaScript rendering and robots.txt rules for search and AI crawlers. Fix anything blocking either.
- Weeks 2 to 3: build the question set. List 50 to 100 buyer questions across awareness, comparison and decision. Record who ranks and who AI names for each one today.
- Weeks 3 to 6: fix your money pages. Service, industry and product pages get answer-first intros, clear structure, FAQs, schema and proof.
- Weeks 4 to 8: fill the gaps. Write guides and comparison pages for questions where competitors are named and you are not.
- Weeks 6 to 12: earn mentions. Pitch data and expert commentary to industry media, update partner and directory listings, and collect reviews.
- Every month: measure both. Rankings and clicks for SEO; mention rate, citation rate and share of voice for GEO; leads and revenue for the business.
The 90-day plan by week, 1 to 12. Week 1 to 12:
- Audit access: weeks 1 to 2
- Build question set: weeks 2 to 3
- Fix money pages: weeks 3 to 6
- Fill gaps: weeks 4 to 8
- Earn mentions: weeks 6 to 12
- Measure: every month, weeks 4, 8 and 12
Checklist
A real example
Narayana Health shows what happens when SEO and GEO move together. Between April and August 2025, organic clicks grew 79% and search impressions doubled, while the number of keywords where the hospital appears in Google AI Overviews grew from 2,040 to 5,315 (Google Search Console and Semrush). The same content and technical work lifted both.
Common mistakes
- Treating GEO as a separate project. Splitting it from SEO duplicates work and creates conflicting pages.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident. A security plugin or CDN rule can shut out AI bots without anyone noticing.
- Chasing one AI answer. Answers vary between runs; track trends across a question set.
- Writing for bots, not buyers. Content stuffed with keywords or statistics without substance helps neither channel.
- Measuring GEO without leads. Mentions only matter if they lead to branded searches, visits and inquiries.

Questions people ask
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO. AI answers still lean on pages that search engines trust, so strong SEO remains the foundation.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap. AEO focuses on being the direct answer, including featured snippets and voice; GEO focuses on being named and cited in AI-generated answers.
How do I know if AI assistants mention my brand?
Run a fixed set of buyer questions through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews each month and record mentions and citations, or use a tracking tool such as Surface.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Fixing crawler access and page structure can change citations within weeks; earning broader mentions and authority takes several months.
Do I need different content for GEO and SEO?
Usually not. The same page can rank and be cited if it answers the question directly, goes deep, and is well structured and well sourced.
