AI Visibility in Indian Education 2026
We asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity 42 questions Indian students and parents ask, and recorded every institution named in all 126 answers.
Five things every institution should know
- 01The assistants rarely agree
For the same question, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity named about 36 institutions between them. Three in four were named by only one assistant; about one in ten by all three.
- 02Portals write the shortlist
Careers360, Shiksha, CollegeDunia and school portals were cited far more than institutions’ own sites. Perplexity leaned on portals; ChatGPT cited Wikipedia more than any other site.
- 03Rankings and placements drive university answers
When AI explained why it named a university, rankings and placements came up most. For online programs it was flexibility; for schools, academics and faculty.
- 04Being named first is concentrated
ISB was named first in 29% of business school answers, Allen in 28% of test prep answers and Delhi Public School in 21% of school answers.
- 05AI is almost always positive
Only about 2% of mentions carried a caveat such as cost or selectivity. Being left out, not being criticised, is the real risk.
Three assistants, three different shortlists
Share of institutions named for a question, by how many of the three assistants named them.
Portals shape the answers
85% of answers with sources cited at least one education portal; 52% cited any institution’s own site. Share of all 712 citations by type, and the most cited domains.
Who gets named, segment by segment
Share of answers in each segment that named the institution, across all three assistants.
Is your institution in these lists? We will run your students’ questions and show you who AI names instead.
Where all three assistants agree, and where they don’t
For each school question: how many schools the three assistants named between them, and the schools all three named. For three questions, no school was named by all three.

How we ran it
- 42 questions in five segments: universities (12), business schools (8), online and working-professional programs (5), edtech and test prep (6), schools (11), written the way students and parents ask.
- ChatGPT (gpt-4.1), Gemini (2.5 Flash) and Perplexity (Sonar), web search on, set to India, through DataForSEO’s LLM Responses API: 126 answers on 1 November 2026.
- Every institution named in an answer was recorded and normalized (for example VIT, VIT Vellore and Vellore Institute of Technology count as one). Group brands with many campuses count once per answer.
- Sources: 712 links cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity across 84 answers. Gemini’s links are redirects and are excluded from the source analysis.
- Themes come from the text AI wrote beside each name, matched to keyword groups. AI answers change between runs; treat this as a snapshot, not a ranking.
