Short answer
AI assistants try not to repeat claims they cannot trust, so they lean on sources that other credible sites already cite, link to and agree with. That is citation authority. A brand mentioned consistently by industry publications, directories, reviews and partners is far more likely to be named in an AI answer than one that only talks about itself.
Ways to build it:
- Earn mentions, not just links: industry media, association sites, event pages and partner listings.
- Publish something worth citing: original data, benchmarks or clear definitions others will reference.
- Keep facts consistent: the same name, description, address and services on every profile.
- Collect reviews on Google and the platforms your buyers check.
- Get listed where AI looks: respected directories, comparison sites and Wikipedia or Wikidata where you qualify.
